We live as we dream

“We live, as we dream – alone.”

Heart of Darkness (1899) by Joseph Conrad
As a young person studying English literature, I absolutely hated this book. It was SO hard to read. Intense, mired in symbolism, far removed from my world. I had to force myself to complete it.

Yet today, over and over again, the same horror of humanity, that moral darkness Conrad makes us trudge through, keeps flowing out through my pen. 1899 or 2016…the world’s not so different at all.
